All hail the wonderful Canadians and especially those involved with On Spec, the Alberta based spec fic magazine for they have published a story of mine! Behold the glorious cover.

Details of how to acquire this, should you wish to, can be found on their site at: https://onspec.ca/2024/03/20/on-spec-127-is-released-into-the-wild/

My tale is one of a wee, wrinkly old man contemplating his mortality while hiking up into the wilds. Which as I’m just back from a week on Arran for my fiftieth birthday where I did a bit of hill walking, is wildly well timed.

The story itself is a fantasy tale of gnomes and ogres that I wrote once as part of a wider world building exercise for a potential novel. The novel got as far as getting critted but by then I’d fallen out of love with it. Possibly because I am too lazy for such hard work. But I’m very glad that this story survived to get published. It just goes to show that all work can lead to something, even if you think it is just a preparatory exercise for something else.

Don’t throw stuff away!

Time for a celebratory cup of tea and maybe a wee gawp at nature to see if I can catch something amazing.

A cheeky wee update to this to note that On Spec appears to be quite popular with reviewers. Here are three different reviews that go through each story and don’t make me ashamed to point at them. Which is nice.
